Scraggy Moo studied a BA(Hons) in Creative Expressive Therapies at the University of Derby from 2007-2010 and lived in halls of residence at Nunnery Court during her first year.
In 2020 I was delighted to be asked by the Residence Life Co-ordinator at the University of Derby to facilitate weekly creative sessions for students. These became online zoom sessions during lockdown and are now in person at Peak Court every fortnight. These sessions are free for students and all materials are provided.
Using the arts to explore different ideas and themes the Creative Arts Social encourages creative expression through a variety of art making and craft ideas.

The Creative Arts Social sessions happen every fortnight for students living in halls of residence. The session can be self directed with the art materials provided. I also invite students to engage in a creative exercise if they would like to explore a new activity.
This is a time and space for students who may just need to have a rest from studying and meet new friends across halls. Students can enjoy a break from their own flat and simply relax in an informal environment.
We engaged in a hand drawing exercise where feelings were expressed with the use of colour. Some hands were full of words and imagery as all students are given the creative license to express themselves in their own way.
During lockdown I facilitated the Creative Arts Social via zoom for students. During some sessions we were inspired by art history to create our own pieces of art.
Art can be a tool to express our emotions within the safe holding of a group. Art is a very personal experience and these sessions are process and not product focused.
One student gathered a collection of circles made from textiles and glued them together to create flowers. The white textile pieces became vibrant in colour through the use of acrylic paints.
Having the freedom to explore their own minds, ideas and art materials students practice the art of creative expression being inspired by stimuli within.
